about

This track was born as a true collaboration of artists during the pandemic. I’ve always had the hardest time with lyrics, and when I became stuck songwriting, I turned to a book of Poetry by Shel Silverstein. I began recording music to the poems from “Where the Sidewalk Ends” in attempts to get back into songwriting after a depressing 2 years, which garnered lots of positive response when the videos were posted on my socials.

After spotting a book of poems on the shelf by friend and local artist Todd Cirillo, I started flipping through his book “Kisses from a Straight Razor,” and was drawn to one poem titled, “High School Reunion”. Although this was a somber piece written about a reunion that didn’t exist in reality, I re-shaped the words about “dirt road days” with a positive spin over steel drums, electronic and live drums, synths, electric guitars, and with honey toned vocals sewn in. It organically evolved into a catchy pop-rock piece, and I knew we were on to something.Todd couldn’t have been more flattered when I asked his permission to record and distribute the track as an official single, and here we are.

lyrics

At the back porch bar, as far south as the road can go
A song from sophomore year, Comes on the radio
“The Heart of the Matter”, it played on MTV
Slow dances under black bedroom lights while staring at ceilings

How did we end up back here again
Reading long gone names carved in of old friends
On this wooden barstool I’m sitting in

Just another Soul of the Summer
Try to get away
Just another Soul of the Summer
Try to get away, get away

Voices carry at low lit dead end streets
Behind buildings and through your cars front seats
To get this far, all these miles away
Only to end up back, to those dirt road days

How did we end up back here again
Reading long gone names carved in of old friends
On this wooden barstool I’m sitting in

Just another Soul of the Summer
Try to get away
Just another Soul of the Summer
Try to get away, get away

How did we end up back here again
Reading long gone names carved in of old friends
On this wooden barstool I’m sitting in

Just another Soul of the Summer
Try to get away
Just another Soul of the Summer
Try to get away, get away, get away, get away
Those dirt road days, those dirt road days.
